YannDemange
Born in Paris and raised in London, Yann cut his teeth filming live concerts, assisting on music promos, and editing commercials and films for a spectrum of artists spanning Eric Clapton to Britney Spears. Yes, Britney Spears.
With a broad foundation of skills, Yann went on to study Film at the prestigious London College of Printing. His 2001 graduation piece, Joe, was accepted by the British Council as part of its festival program and was screened internationally. Having been bitten by the film bug, Yann spent the next two years working directly with a roster of international brands, shooting a series of ethnographic documentary pieces for clients including Haagen-Dazs, Johnson and Johnson and GE. These early films explored a range of social and cultural groups, allowing Yann to hone his eye for narrative detail and the intricacies of portraying characters in a realistic light.
Following this, Yann attended the National Film and Television School to undertake an MA in Fiction Directing where he was the recipient of a full scholarship from Disney. Graduating in 2006, Yann went straight to work on a comedy drama for Channel 4 called Man in a Box. A review from the Observer newspaper praised the piece as being “…quite possibly the funniest thing Channel 4 have shown this year.” Always one for a challenge, Yann turned his sights towards commercials, shooting a hard-hitting domestic violence spot for France, The Child.
Yann's latest four part series ‘Top Boy’ was written by Ronan Bennet (Public Enemy, The Hamburg Cell) for Channel 4. Set in Hackney, London, the drama looks beyond the headlines about youth crime and delves into the personal stories of those involved. It features a score by Brian Eno and showcases a cast of many first time actors including rapper Kano as well as the more familiar faces of Ashley Walters and Kierston Wareing. The critically acclaimed series won Best Drama Serial at the Royal Television Society awards.
Other notable work includes the five part BBC series Criminal Justice, for which he was nominated for the Craft award for Best Director in the 2010 BAFTAs and TV drama slash zombie romp Dead Set, written by cult-journalist and presenter Charlie Brooker, which was nominated for a BAFTA for Best Drama serial.
Yann’s most recent work includes a promo for musician Plan B’s single ‘Ill Manors’ and his first commercial for Grolsch, which was shot on location in Kiev.
